Treatment of Haemorrhoids

Haemorrhoids (piles) are enlarged blood vessels in the lower rectum or anus. They are a common condition that can cause bleeding, itching, discomfort, pain, or prolapse (tissue that protrudes during bowel motions).

Haemorrhoids develop when there is increased pressure on the veins around the anus. Common contributing factors include constipation, straining, prolonged sitting on the toilet, pregnancy, ageing, and chronic diarrhoea.

Treatment may be recommended if symptoms are persistent, recurrent, or affecting your quality of life despite dietary changes, fibre supplementation, or medical therapy.

Depending on the severity of your symptoms, treatment may include:

  • Dietary and lifestyle advice
  • Haemorrhoid injection (sclerotherapy) for selected bleeding internal haemorrhoids
  • Rubber band ligation (banding) for symptomatic internal haemorrhoids
  • Referral for surgery for larger or more advanced haemorrhoids

Yes. Not all rectal bleeding is caused by haemorrhoids. An assessment is important to confirm the diagnosis, exclude other causes of bleeding, and recommend the most appropriate treatment for your symptoms.
