Colonoscopy
A colonoscopy is a highly precise, routine procedure used to examine the entire lining of the large bowel (colon) and rectum. It remains the gold standard method globally for the detection and prevention of bowel cancer.
Why is a Colonoscopy Recommended?
A colonoscopy is vital for both proactive preventive health and diagnosing specific lower gastrointestinal symptoms. Common indications for a referral include:
- A positive National Bowel Cancer Screening Program (FOBT) kit result
- A personal or family history of bowel cancer or colorectal polyps
- Changes in bowel habits, such as persistent diarrhea, constipation, or alternating patterns
- Unexplained rectal bleeding or tracking blood in the stool
- Assessment and treatment of haemorrhoids
- Long-term monitoring and assessment of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
Preventing Cancer via Polyp Removal
During the examination, our specialists carefully look for polyps, which are small growths on the bowel wall. While most polyps start as benign, certain types have precancerous potential over time. If any polyps are detected, they can be safely and painlessly removed immediately during the colonoscopy, effectively eliminating the risk of them developing into cancer.
What to Expect on the Day
A colonoscopy is performed as a day-stay procedure under light, comfortable sedation.
- The entire procedure takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes.
- The anesthetist ensures you remain safely asleep and entirely pain-free.
- Following a short stay in the recovery room, you will be served a light snack before being discharged to your nominated driver.
The Importance of Bowel Preparation
For a successful examination, the bowel must be completely clear so our specialists have perfect structural visibility. This involves a modified diet and a gentle laxative solution (the “bowel prep”) taken the day before. Our practice provides a clear, step-by-step preparation guide to make this process as smooth as possible.
Our gastroenterologists perform routine colonoscopy procedures at The Sydney Private Hospital in Ashfield and Strathfield Private Hospital.
